Name: Jiajun

Program: MSDABC Class of 2023

Hometown: Shanghai, China

Undergraduate school: NYU Shanghai

Undergraduate major: Economics with both Data Science and Social Science as minors

Previous internship experience:

  • Emani, Part-time Data Analyst

Reason for choosing the MSDABC program:

It gives me both American and Chinese academic experiences. It also teaches me both “hardware” and “software” skills for Business Analytics, from communication techniques to coding capability. Business Communication provided me with necessary skills to present results in front of the professional audience. Meanwhile I gained technical skills by taking courses like Predictive Modeling Using R and Stochastic Modeling & Simulation. The Capstone Project will also offer me a chance to solve real life cases.

Goal after the MS degree: pursue a career in Consulting

Fun fact: a fan of aviation, arms and anime; enjoys cooking

  1. What’s your favorite summer course?

My favorite summer course is Predictive Modeling Using R taught by Professor Gal Oestreicher-Singer. This class provides an introduction to R for data analytics and covers the theoretical foundations as well as the practical aspects of predictive analytics. Since part of the overall grade is determined by a competition of generating the best model to predict the potential donors of a charity organization, I have learned how to run predictive models.  With the help of predictive modeling, I would be able to conduct predictions on future market tendencies based on past dataset and prediction of market trends is one of the most important tasks of data analysts.

  1. What was your most memorable program experience to date?

My most memorable program experience was to take the Circle Line Sightseeing Boat Cruise. I had been in New York City for around 7 months, but I had hardly visited any famous scenic spots in this city. This tour provided me with a great opportunity to see the iconic landmarks while getting to know some students from other programs.

  1. What was it like to study and live in NYC in the summer? Tell us your own experience.

I live in Palladium, the NYU dorm. During my free time, I enjoy visiting museums. One of my favorite visits was to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Arts (MET) where I had the opportunity to see the archeological collections from Egypt, Middle East and Europe as well as the artistic works from Europe. I also loved the Chinese porcelains and paintings exhibited in the MET.
