  1. Why did you choose the MSMRS program?

Marketing is everywhere. Companies promote and advertise their products or services from physical locations to online platforms. However, the marketing industry has changed dramatically. It comprises a broad set of strategies that requires solid marketing research. Although I took some marketing courses during my undergraduate study, I had very limited knowledge of the Chinese market. I chose the MSMRS program to study marketing and understand the Chinese market in a more systematic way. I hope to become a creative marketer and connect with peers who share the same interests and goals with me.

  1. What has been your favorite course in the Fall semester so far?

My favorite course so far is Retail Technology and Channel Management taught by Professor Rayn Wang. This course helped me understand how technology has advanced the Chinese market while giving me valuable insight into how different channels are connected. I completely changed my view from a consumer to a marketer after taking the course. By digging up more information about different companies, I learned that there are so many operational stages behind the promise of delivery and service, and its promise may not be achieved in different tiers of cities for each customer segment. We have to customize each channel to minimize risks when launching new products or services in the retail industry. Professor Wang also encouraged us to think more critically and more professionally before enacting any strategy with balanced cost.

  1. What was your most memorable program experience this Fall?

As the cohort leader of my program, I organized a hot pot gathering for my peers so they had a chance to interact with each other more closely outside the classroom. I also invited Professor Rayn Wang to join the event. Having a very busy fall semester, I realize that I cherish every moment we spend together as a cohort. Getting a job offer is not the ultimate goal of our lives. It’s critical to take advantage of the MS program to connect with peers and professors as well as solidify our knowledge before entering the workforce.

  1. What has it been like to study and live in Shanghai this Fall?

I am a Sang Hei Ning (Shanghainese) who spent the last seven years studying abroad. I feel grateful that NYU has a campus located in my hometown, allowing me to gain deep insights into the Chinese market and its rapid technology development. I also live near campus. I find my life in Shanghai very convenient. I often work out at the student fitness center and hang out with my classmates around campus. I especially enjoy the 30-min express delivery service of almost everything I order. Lastly, I love trying out different cuisines in Shanghai and experiencing different cultures in this metropolitan city.
