Why did you choose this program?

Emerging technologies such as machine learning, AI, and blockchain present exciting opportunities for individuals. This program provided an avenue for me to engage with and learn about these cutting-edge technologies, equipping me to seize future opportunities.

What was (were) your favorite course(s) and why?

Machine learning and AI courses taught by professor Ming Liao.Professor Liao is an expert in both teaching and industry. In addition to theoretical knowledge, he provides a lot of valuable industry insights and practical experience.

What are some takeaways from the capstone project experience?

Our capstone project was working with Nomura Security to predict bonds yield. Throughout the project, we extensively studied relevant literature, practiced data collection and processing techniques, and applied various machine learning models. We got valuable guidance from our professor and sponsors. I gained experience in the bond market and quantitative prediction.

Do you currently have an internship or did you have an internship during your program study? If yes, how did you find this internship and what knowledge or skills did you learn from this internship?

I didn’t do a long-term internship during the program. As I have previous working experience, I wanted to put more time into learning knowledge. In addition to the MSDABC courses, I self-taught advanced programming, machine learning and blockchain courses.

How do you think the joint set up of the program between Stern and NYU Shanghai impacts the student experience?

Unfortunately, I was unable to go to New York due to the pandemic. However, this program still offered me the opportunity to take courses from professors at both Stern and NYU Shanghai. I have been impressed by their extensive knowledge and expertise. This program is particularly suitable for those who aspire to develop their careers in China.

How has this program shaped your career aspirations?

The program equipped me with advanced data analytics skills, and it helped me learn about cutting-edge technologies. I now possess a broader skill set that allows me to try various opportunities.

What are your plans after graduation?

I am interested in using technology to empower businesses. These years have witnessed the flourishing development of artificial intelligence and the digital economy. I will continue to learn and update my knowledge in these areas, trying to explore downstream applications of these new technologies.

What else did you enjoy about being a student in this program? (ie. social, academic, professional examples)

The program offers opportunities for us to gain insights about real-world business. We had several guest speakers, who are data leaders from big companies, sharing their experiences and perspectives. Additionally, we had the opportunity to visit Meituan to closely learn about a tech company. Center for Career Development also provided a lot of career advice and opportunities.

What is your advice for prospective students who are interested in the program?

Before starting the program, I had limited programming experience, and my knowledge of mathematics had faded over time. To prepare myself, I took four online courses: CS50 from Harvard and CS61 from Berkeley, linear algebra and calculus taught by Gilbert Strang. So I would recommend that students review these topics if they’re feeling out of practice.
