The Class of 2024 of the NYU Stern - NYU Shanghai MS Programs started the new year at Stern in NYC on May 31, 2023. Students from the four MS programs, MS in Data Analytics and Business Computing (MSDABC), MS in Organization Management & Strategy (MSOMS), MS in Marketing and Retail Science (MSOMS), and MS in Quantitative Finance (MSQF), attended Orientation at Stern where they learned about school resources, met with the program academic directors and faculty, and connected with their peers. This orientation was particularly special as it marked the first time since Summer 2019 that all students were able to begin their program journey in person in New York due to pandemic related restrictions. The program commences with a Summer term at NYU Stern followed by the remainder of the program completed at NYU Shanghai.

Rohit Deo, Director of the NYU Stern – NYU Shanghai MS Programs, delivered a welcome speech to kick off orientation where he encouraged students to enhance their learning inside and outside of the classroom by building deep connections with their faculty and peers as they explore the two megacities of New York and Shanghai. Eric Mao, Dean of the Graduate and Advanced Education at NYU Shanghai, challenged students to be the best version of themselves in the programs: “I challenge you to devote yourself: mind, body and soul, to your classes, to your faculty, to each other, to be wholly invested in earning your degrees. I challenge you to be an active learner to make the classroom environment one of collegiality, not individuality.”

Students then participated in an icebreaker activity to get to know each other, followed by a scavenger hunt to become familiar with campus resources and the surrounding area. They also learned about tools, tips and strategies to navigate graduate life while connecting with academic directors, and faculty and staff from the admissions office, library, and the Office of Global Services. To cap off the day, students, staff, and faculty gathered for a happy hour at a local restaurant.

On June 13, students attended the Career Services Orientation session hosted by the NYU Shanghai Center for Career Development team, who introduced career services and support, and shared timelines and next steps for helping students to uncover and accomplish their career destination and goals. Students will be able to meet with career advisors in June at Stern for their first round of one-on-one career coaching appointments, which focus on crafting resumes, identifying career goals, discussing job search strategies, and making action plans. Throughout the year, students will also have opportunities to attend alumni networking events, career preparation workshops, distinguished industry speaker series, and job fairs.

Hao Guo, Director of NYU Shanghai Center for Career Development (CCD), introduced the CCD team to the new students.
Students will complete 13.5 credits of foundational courses this summer while also visiting many leading companies in different industries, immersing themselves in American business culture and interacting directly with working professionals. They will continue to foster peer bonding and learn more about the local culture and customs through a variety of extracurricular activities organized by the program staff and their cohort leaders. Following the end of summer courses in mid August, students will head to Shanghai, China to start their fall semester at NYU Shanghai’s new Qiantan campus.
