Reason for choosing this program:
I chose the Master of Science in Marketing & Retail Science because it aligns with my passion for global marketing and my desire to understand diverse consumer behaviors, particularly in emerging markets like China. Having participated in trade fairs in both Brazil and China, I was eager to deepen my expertise in innovative marketing strategies. The program’s presence on both the NYU New York and Shanghai campuses, along with the opportunity to engage with leading companies through the capstone project, further solidified my decision. It offers a perfect blend of academic learning and real-world application, helping me bridge theory and practice.
Career goals and interests:
I am taking steps to build a career in international marketing, with a focus on cross-cultural strategies and leveraging data-driven decision-making to help businesses expand globally. I’m particularly interested in connecting Chinese companies with the Latin American market and vice versa. With fluency in English, Chinese, and Portuguese, I hope to integrate my diverse background and language skills into my work. The program’s emphasis on Chinese and Asian markets, combined with its global perspective, will equip me with the expertise to thrive in multinational corporations or entrepreneurial ventures. My ultimate goal is to develop the skills needed to help businesses successfully navigate the complexities of international expansion.
What was your favorite course this summer?
The Marketing Management class at NYU Stern, taught by Professor Thomaï Serdari, was a standout course for me because of its focus on real-world marketing strategies. Professor Serdari's expertise in luxury branding and positioning added depth to our discussions, especially around decision-making in uncertain environments.
We worked on Harvard Business case studies, including brands like Chase and Sephora, which bridged the gap between theory and practice. The assignments pushed us to think critically about complex marketing issues. A key takeaway was learning how to make informed decisions in high-stakes situations—a skill I’ll apply in global marketing and cross-cultural brand strategies.

What was a memorable experience this summer outside of class?
One of my most memorable program experiences was the visit to Estee Lauder's headquarters in New York City. It provided valuable insights into branding and marketing strategies, with direct engagement from senior executives. Hearing their perspectives on navigating global markets and adapting strategies for mature markets like the U.S. versus emerging ones like China was particularly enriching.
Additionally, events like the Circle Line Sightseeing Boat Cruise and the Yankees game at Yankee Stadium allowed for peer bonding and exploration of New York’s iconic landmarks, making the program both professionally and personally enriching.

What is a typical day like while studying at Stern living in NYC this summer?
A typical day as a student at Stern in NYC this summer was a dynamic blend of academics, exploration, and city life. To be honest, the coursework at Stern was intense. After spending some time working, returning to academic life required some adjustments. Balancing the demanding academic schedule with the vibrant energy of New York City was both exciting and challenging. However, the rigor of the program pushed me to grow, sharpen my time management skills, and stay focused on my long-term goals. While the pace was fast, it was also incredibly rewarding, especially when complimented by everything the city has to offer.

What is one thing you’re looking forward to doing in Shanghai during the fall semester?
Academically, I’m looking forward to courses like Retail Technology and Channel Management: The Chinese Market, which will offer valuable insights into local consumer behaviors and retail strategies. Professionally, I’m excited to take full advantage of the Career Center’s resources, such as career coaching, to identify a path that aligns with my experience and long-term goals. Having worked in São Paulo and New York, gaining hands-on experience in Shanghai will further deepen my understanding of global markets and broaden my perspective on how different regions approach marketing and business strategies.
