NYU Shanghai - NYU Stern 2019 Fall Semester in Shanghai

December 20, 2019

Written by NYU Shanghai

During their first semester at NYU Shanghai, MS Quantitative Finance (MSQF) and MS Data Analytics & Business Computing (MSDABC) students were engaged with coursework, company visits, and career development events. Here is a recap of the Fall 2019 semester:

Courses
Students completed 12 credits over the course of the fall semester. For the most part, courses are scheduled in an intensive meeting format over the course of a few weeks rather than over the whole semester; as a result, students are able to focus on one course at a time.

Company Visits
As part of the program’s focus on exposing students to diverse companies, industry experts, and careers, students got out of the classroom to engage with several companies. During the fall semester, MSQF students visited the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Orient Securities Asset Management, and MSDABC students visited ByteDance, Amazon Innovation Center, Shanghai Data Alliance.

The whole group also visited FNZ (FinTech company) and Bloomberg. At Bloomberg, MSDABC students gained insight into data acquisition and processing capabilities, while MSQF students were able to deep-dive into the types of financial research that different companies provides their customers. Additionally, they had in-class speakers from Wells Fargo, Shanghai Stock Exchange, Root Cloud, and Sage Investment Management Co (a hedge fund).

Career Development
The fall semester was full of various career development opportunities designed to build upon the skills, resources and coaching offered during the summer term at Stern. Workshops and one-on-one career coaching appointments with our dedicated career coaches provided students with the opportunity to explore different careers, hone their job search strategy, practice interviewing skills through mock interviews, and review their cover letters and resumes, which were compiled into a book and distributed to prospective employers. In addition to the plethora of job listings available on NYU’s Handshake platform, on-campus recruitment sessions, career panels, and a career fair featuring 75+ employers from more than 20 industries allowed students to network with industry experts and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese and greater Asian industries. Together, these events and opportunities have already yielded interviews, internships, and full time job offers for many of our students.

Looking Ahead
After a busy fall semester, students are looking forward to a break over the winter holidays to return home to see family, travel around the world with friends, continue to work on job applications, and gear up for the spring semester, which will start in early February.
