What led you to apply for and enroll in this program?
I chose this program for its prestigious academic reputation and the unparalleled resources offered by Stern and NYU Shanghai. The combination of rigorous academic training, access to leading industry experts, and the global perspective of studying in two major financial hubs was highly appealing. The program's strong emphasis on quantitative finance and practical application promised to provide the comprehensive insight and skills necessary to excel in the finance industry. I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to learn from distinguished faculty and to leverage the extensive alumni network for career advancement.
Initially, I was uncertain about which specific area of finance I wanted to focus on. However, the program's coursework and exposure to various financial disciplines helped me narrow my interest to quantitative finance and macroeconomic research. The quantitative courses were particularly instrumental in preparing me for and passing the CFA Level I exam, deepening my understanding of complex financial concepts and analytical techniques.
Additionally, the Career Development Center (CDC) at NYU Shanghai provided invaluable support in honing my interview techniques and job search strategies. Their guidance helped me secure my internship at Honghu Investment Management Company Limited, where I have been able to apply my refined career direction and specialized skills. This hands-on experience in developing global macro CTA strategies and utilizing financial derivatives has been crucial in solidifying my commitment to a career in finance.
Which course(s) and/or professor(s) stand out from this past year?
The first is Debt Instruments, taught by Professor Jennifer Carpenter. Professor Carpenter is exceptionally nice and patient, and under her guidance, I gained a deep understanding of bond features. Her ability to explain complex concepts clearly and her dedication to student success made the course particularly impactful. The practical knowledge and analytical skills I developed in this class have been directly applicable to my work in the finance industry.
The second is Chinese Financial Markets, taught by Professor Han Shen Lin. This course was instrumental in expanding my knowledge of the Chinese financial market and its distinct characteristics compared to the US market. Professor Lin did an excellent job of mapping out the regulatory landscape and key factors influencing China's financial system. He also emphasized the importance of staying informed about news and policies in both markets, which has been invaluable for my professional development. The insights gained from this course have enhanced my ability to analyze market trends and make informed decisions in a global context.
Both professors have significantly contributed to my academic journey and professional growth, providing me with a solid foundation in critical areas of finance.
What was your favorite part of the capstone project experience?
My favorite part of the capstone project experience was working with East West Bank, which specializes in entertainment loans. This unique opportunity allowed me to learn about specific loan structures and how smaller banks develop niche expertise to compete with larger institutions.
A crucial aspect of our project was defining the scope. We aimed to make a significant impact while ensuring that our objectives were achievable within the given timeframe. Balancing ambition with practicality was both challenging and rewarding. Additionally, the scarcity of data, as loans are often bilateral contracts between banks and their customers, required us to use alternative sources and uncover implicit relationships.
We immersed ourselves in real cases and analyzed numerous annual reports, striving to replicate successful US experiences. Our exploration included innovative loan structures, such as using future cash flows as collateral instead of relying solely on large real estate properties. This approach required us to think creatively and adapt existing financial models to new contexts.
The hands-on experience of diving into industry specifics, performing case studies, and analyzing different financing cases within the entertainment sector was invaluable. It provided practical insights into the complexities of entertainment financing and demonstrated how smaller banks can leverage specialized knowledge to maintain a competitive edge.
Throughout the project, our capstone sponsor provided invaluable guidance, offering perspectives and insights that enriched our understanding and analysis. This mentorship, combined with the academic support from our professors, particularly Professor Han Shen Lin, helped us navigate the challenges and refine our approach.
Overall, the capstone project was an intensive and enlightening journey. It developed my analytical and research skills, provided a practical perspective on specialized loan strategies, and reinforced the importance of adaptability and innovation in the financial industry. The blend of academic rigor and real-world application made this experience exceptionally rewarding and instrumental in my professional growth.
