As recruitment season kicked off this fall, the Center for Career Development at NYU Shanghai (CCD) continued to offer its wide range of services to support students in their career development. While some students focused first on finding a part-time internship to complement their full-time studies and others prioritized a full time offer, CCD’s services aim to educate and empower students in their professional competencies regardless of what point in the process they are in.
Career Coaching
Throughout the whole MS program, CCD provides individualized and comprehensive one-on-one career coaching services to help students explore their career interests, develop action plans, hone their resume, and achieve their career goals. Students can either make 30-minute coaching appointments or 15-minute walk-in chats with a career advisor.
Kaixin Mao, a current student from the MS in Data Analytics and Business Computing (MSDABC) program who aims to become an analyst in the securities industry in the short term and a fund manager in the long term, found the one-on-one career coaching quite helpful: “The career advisors would chat with me about details such as my internship experience, my courses, and my job preferences while sharing their perspectives on various industry segments. I used to be very hesitant about whether to go into investment banking or industrial research, but the conversations with the career advisors made my professional path more clear. I always feel more inspired and relaxed after I chat with them.”
Career Readiness Development Program
One of the hallmark offerings of the CCD is the Career Readiness Development Program (CRDP), which consists of the Distinguished Industry Speaker Series and Recruitment Preparation Series. As part of the Distinguished Industry Speaker Series, CCD invited renowned business leaders from industries and conducted lectures on topics such as securities, consumer goods, consulting, commercial banks, private equity, asset management, and auto & new energy. These individuals shared their unique expertise and perspectives, offering students an opportunity to get an inside look at a particular industry, company, or job function. CCD also shared workshops on topics such as resume crafting and interview preparation in the Recruitment Preparation Series, which aimed to expand students’ knowledge on job searching strategies and enhance their career skills in the hiring process.
Employer Engagement Program
CCD regularly partners with employers throughout the year to host the Employer Engagement Program. In the fall semester, 56 employers from 13 different industries attended the Fall 2023 Career Fair, and CCD also organized 11 individual recruitment sessions and three company visits. Students had the opportunity to unlock the most up to date career opportunities, gain first-hand industry knowledge, and connect with companies such as Bloomberg, CITIC Securities, FNZ, Jardine Matheson, PwC, Shanghai Disney Resort, Richemont, and J.P. Morgan.

Angela Zhang, a current student from the MS in Marketing and Retail Science (MSMRS) program, has been interning in the marketing department at Montblanc, where she focuses on search engine marketing (SEM) and marketing campaign planning and coordination. She secured her internship through the career fair organized by CCD: “CCD’s encouragement to network and directly converse with company representatives in the job fair was instrumental in making a positive impression and understanding the specific needs and expectations of the roles available. Additionally, they worked with me several times to refine my resume. This meticulous preparation and tailored approach ensured that my skills and experiences, particularly in marketing and communication, were effectively showcased and aligned with the opportunities at Montblanc.” So far the internship has been a great fit: “My short-term career goals are centered around expanding my expertise in marketing and public relations, particularly within the fashion or fashion-tech sectors. This aligns with my experiences at Richemont Montblanc as a marketing intern, which allows me to apply my academic knowledge in marketing and retail science, and skills in Python, MS Office, iMovie, and Adobe Audio, in a practical setting, further enhancing my expertise in digital marketing.”
CCD also frequently posts exclusive job and internship openings from leading companies across different industries through the CCD WeChat account. Many students end up landing their internship or job from these exclusive posts; one such student is Jingyun Liu, a current MSDABC student who chose the 20-month track to complete her MS degree. “Opting for the 20-month graduation path was a big decision for me, aimed at maximizing my professional exposure and experience. This past summer and fall, I dedicated my time to an intensive full-time internship at a fund management company in their marketing department. I found this opportunity through the CCD WeChat account. This role allowed me to blend my interests in marketing and technology within the finance industry, a combination I believe is key to driving innovative and dynamic changes in this sector.” As she prepares to graduate at the end of the semester, she was excited to receive a full-time job offer from the company. Congratulations to Jingyun!
CCD Master’s Ambassadors
CCD selected six ambassadors this year from the joint MS programs to support career education workshops and employer events. These career ambassadors also lead research groups throughout the academic year in industries including technology, investment banking, PE/VC, consulting, advertising/communication, and consumer goods, and engage with their classmates who are interested in these industries. Both Angela and Kaixin are career ambassadors; Kaixin leads a research group on investment banking while Angela leads a group on advertising/communication. Angela reflected on the opportunity to be a CCD ambassador, sharing: “My role as a career ambassador not only allows me to share my own experiences and insights but also helps in building a community of well-prepared individuals. I also collaborate closely with the CCD staff to provide student feedback, offering a student perspective to make sure the center's services meet the diverse needs of the student body.”
Looking Ahead
As the fall semester wraps up and students head into the spring semester with graduation looming on the horizon, the CCD team will continue to provide personalized support to help every student prepare for and achieve their post-Master’s goals.
