On Friday afternoon, September 4th, Mr. Yulin (Frank) Yao, esteemed NYU Stern alumnus, joined our MSQF and MSDABC students on campus to share his background, expertise and advice on pursuing a career in the investment industry.
Mr. Yao is Managing Partner and Senior Portfolio Manager at Green Court Capital Management, an investment management firm focused on Greater China’s public markets. He received an MBA in Finance in 1998 from NYU Stern, where he was honored as a Stern Scholar. Mr. Yao currently serves as a member of the NYU Stern Executive Board for the Stern School of Business at New York University. Two other members from Green Court Capital Management, Ms. Claire Song, an alumna of NYU Shanghai, and Ms. Fan Jia, Vice President and Research Analyst, also joined the meeting. As Ms. Jia runs the Emerging Investment Analyst summer program, students were eager to learn more from her about careers at the company and to hear suggestions on how to position their qualifications and skills for interviews and job applications.
Following introductions, the students were excited to have the opportunity to ask Mr. Yao numerous questions on topics ranging from industry development trends, navigating challenging times throughout Green Court’s history, changes to investing in China’s markets and career advice. “I am very impressed with these questions,” said Mr. Yao, “which have been high-quality and indicate the forward vision and deep thinking of our students. These questions show me that our students in the NYU Shanghai – NYU Stern programs are top-level ones.”
Mr. Yao shared his experience facing challenges during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis when Lehman Brothers went bankrupt. He also identified five qualities that he thinks all successful employees should exhibit both during an interview and at a job: integrity, long-term commitment, intellectual curiosity, intellectual honesty and discipline.
Thank you to Mr. Yao, Ms. Song, and Ms. Jia for sharing their time and expertise with our students. This meeting was a testament to the NYU connection - both NYU Shanghai and Stern!
