Chris is currently a student in the NYU Stern-NYU Shanghai MS in Data Analytics & Business Computing Program Class of 2024. He is taking courses at NYU Shanghai this Fall. Meet Chris and learn more about his program experience.
Hometown: Beijing, China
Undergraduate school: Rutgers University
Undergraduate major: Business Analytics and Information Technology
Reason for choosing this program: Pursuing a major in Data Analytics and Business Computing while participating in this joint Master’s program has been an invaluable opportunity to gain exposure to diverse cultural and technological landscapes. This experience has not only broadened my academic knowledge in data science and business, but also deepened my understanding of global tech trends and practices. Engaging with two distinct countries, the US and China, during my educational journey has significantly enhanced my global awareness and adaptability, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of technology. I feel this program is equipping me with a unique blend of skills that are highly sought after in today’s interconnected and digitally-driven world.
Short-term career goal(s) after MS degree: I am particularly focused on gaining industry-specific experience, especially in the gaming industry, which is using a lot of AIGC (Artificial Intelligence - Generated Content) to make real life tasks into virtual gaming style. My objective is to understand how data analytics can be applied to solve real-world problems unique to this sector. This involves not only analyzing large datasets but also interpreting them to make meaningful and actionable industry context.
- What’s your favorite course so far?
Machine Learning taught by Professor Tim Zheng was my favorite course so far because it showed the power of algorithms to learn from data and make smart decisions. This means machines can do tasks on their own, which is really cool. The mix of learning the theory and then actually doing projects was great – it made the subject come alive and easy to understand. Also, Professor Tim brought in business leaders and experts to talk with us, which was a big bonus. It gave us a glimpse into the real world and got us ready for what's ahead in our careers.
- What are your impressions of the NYU New York and NYU Shanghai campuses?
What impressed me the most was that NYU Shanghai is just like NYU in NYC, which made me feel like I am connected with the world, with opportunities to learn about Chinese culture, language, and business practices. In addition, NYU Shanghai is located in Pudong, Shanghai, which offers students a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures.
- What were some memorable program experiences this summer and fall?
I wanted to share one of my most memorable experiences recently – attending the pumpkin carving party organized by NYU Shanghai. It was an incredible event that brought a slice of American culture right here to Shanghai, something I greatly appreciated. Carving my own pumpkin was an absolute delight. I never realized how creative and fun it could be! Each cut and curve brought my pumpkin to life, and I felt a surprising sense of pride in my creation. It's not just a pumpkin; it's a piece of art that I crafted with my own hands. What made the event even more special was the realization of how such cultural exchanges can bridge our diverse backgrounds. Celebrating a quintessentially American tradition like pumpkin carving here in China was a beautiful blend of cultures. It was heartwarming to see students from all over the world coming together, sharing stories, and creating their own pumpkin masterpieces.

- What was it like to study and live in New York and Shanghai?
Living in New York exposes you to a melting pot of cultures, languages, and traditions. This diversity extends to the food, art, and entertainment available, making everyday life a multicultural experience. On the Shanghai campus, the brand new buildings not only represent the most advanced technology, but also bring a modern, safe, and clean living and learning environment.
