Program: MSOMS Class of 2023

Hometown: Beijing, China

Undergraduate school: George Washington University

Undergraduate major: International Affairs with Minor in Business Administration

Previous work experience: Freelancer, Business Development department at JD Technology

Reason for choosing this program: This program offers a unique perspective on both the US and Chinese sides. As a person who is interested in consulting, business development and entrepreneurship, this program is very helpful and applicable for me as I am able to learn about strategies and management.

Goals after MS degree: I plan to continue working in the business development field after I receive my MS degree. I would like to pursue a MBA degree after working for one or two years. My goal is to start my own business in three to five years.

  1. What’s your favorite summer course?

My favorite course is Strategic Landscape taught by Professor Christina Fang, who is the co-academic director of the MSOMS program. This course is both informative and interesting. Professor Fang was extremely organized and clear on her course materials, which was very helpful for us to understand the content. The group project was about innovative business ideas; we were asked to analyze strategies with functional tools and careful analysis. My biggest takeaway is that success is often achieved through careful analysis and there are always strategies for business expansion. The course was really inspirational for me to enter the business world.

  1. What was your most memorable program experience to date?

The company visit to the Bowery Farming was my most memorable program experience. We visited their headquarters in New York City. The office atmosphere was vibrant and creative. The speakers shared their personal experiences as well as their work at Bowery Farming. It was very interesting to learn that people had different career paths, which made us excited about our futures. In addition, Bowery Farming is a high-tech farming company and their business idea is truly inspirational. I think it reflects the spirit of New York city: innovative and creative. When I think of agriculture, the industry seems to be traditional and maybe even a bit tedious. However, Bowery Farming makes agriculture such an exciting business. It was eye opening to see their company and listen to the speakers!

  1. What was it like to study and live in NYC in the summer?

I lived off-campus on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Summer in New York is the best. I had a picnic in central park and went to a Jazz bar to have a night drink. I also had dinner on a boat to enjoy the NYC view and took many morning jogs by the Hudson river. What surprised me the most was how vibrant and diverse the city is. You can always find authentic food and enjoy fun activities in this city!
