The NYU Stern-NYU Shanghai Master’s Programs welcomed its new cohorts of the Class of 2023 of the now four joint MS programs on June 1 for Orientation at NYU Stern in New York City. The inaugural classes of the MS Marketing and Retail Science (MSMRS) and MS Organization Management & Strategy (MSOMS) join the growing portfolio offered by NYU Shanghai and NYU Stern, with the MS in Quantitative Finance (MSQF) and MS in Data Analytics & Business Computing (MSDABC) programs launched in June of 2019.
Students in all four programs begin their year-long academic journey with summer coursework at NYU Stern, followed by fall, winter and spring semesters at NYU Shanghai. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, some students are unable to join in person this summer at Stern, and therefore all summer courses and events will be offered in a hybrid format.

During the orientation’s introductory welcome remarks, Stern and NYU Shanghai program leadership, including Raghu Sundaram, Dean of the Stern School of Business, Rohit Deo, Director, NYU Stern - NYU Shanghai MS Programs, and Eric Mao, Associate Dean of Graduate and Advanced Education at NYU Shanghai, shared well wishes and advice for the new students. “We look forward to a rewarding and productive year supporting these students who are energetic, ambitious, entrepreneurial, and diligent,” remarked Deo. “They will not only have access to the renowned faculty and many resources offered on both campuses, most importantly, they will have the opportunity to create their own network supporting each other in their graduate studies and beyond.”

“Our programs are designed to deliver the best student experience with strong support and guidance from program leadership, faculty and staff at both NYU Stern and NYU Shanghai,” shared Mao. “Students will enhance their learning through academic and extracurricular components, gaining academic expertise, practical skills, professional connection, and cultural empathy.”
During Orientation, students attended multiple sessions designed to introduce those supporting services and resources, including the Career Development Center, Registrar, Office of Global Services, and Library staff in New York and Shanghai. Other sessions, such as ice breakers and program-specific breakouts, helped to foster connection and community with peers, faculty and staff. Students in person in New York also had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Stern building and the surrounding Washington Square campus through a fun scavenger hunt and evening happy hour at a local restaurant.

I strongly believe the MSQF program will equip me to thrive as a future leader in the finance industry.”

In addition to engaging in foundational courses with Stern faculty this summer, students will immerse themselves in company visits and participate in various social events organized by the program to expose them to local New York and American culture and business. Following the end of summer courses in mid August, students will head to Shanghai, China to start their fall semester at NYU Shanghai.
It will be an intensive year of engaged learning both inside and outside of the classroom, and students’ eagerness to get started was palpable during Orientation. Shared Lucas Liu, MSQF ‘23: “I want to take advantage of the one-year master’s program to connect with my classmates coming from diverse backgrounds and faculty members who are the world-leading finance and economic researchers while enjoying the final year of being a student.”
Jade Xie, MSOMS ‘23, expressed similar sentiments of how excited she is to connect with her classmates and anticipating the professional opportunities that the program may provide. “I personally look forward to the capstone project in the coming months and my goal is to work in the FMCG industry as a marketing professional or become a business consultant in one of the top consulting companies after graduation. I want to make connections with my peers this coming year to learn and grow together. “
