In June 2022, students from the Class of 2023 from the four NYU Stern-NYU Shanghai Master’s programs - MS in Data Analytics & Business Computing (MSDABC), MS in Marketing and Retail Science (MSMRS), MS in Organization Management & Strategy (MSOMS), and MS in Quantitative Finance (MSQF) - started their year-long academic journey taking foundational courses taught by the renowned Stern faculty and immersing themselves in various extracurricular activities designed to experience American culture.
Academics
All students are enrolled in 13.5 credits in the summer; the curriculum is lock-step and based on a cohort model, so students in each program take classes together at the same time. To accommodate students who were unable to travel to New York this summer due to continued pandemic-related travel restrictions, courses were offered in a hybrid format; faculty used various approaches to engage with students to support their learning experience. Academic directors of the joint Master’s programs also offered coffee chats and lunch meetings to get to know students better, learn about the students’ interests and needs, and share their own expertise and advice. Tianqi Wu, MSDABC Class of 2023, expressed her gratitude for the close involvement of faculty: “The academic director and professors are always kind and eager to help. We had a good time having lunch together with Professor Jiawei Zhang, MSDABC program director, and Professor Mike Pinedo, instructor for the Operations Management course. We gained a lot of insights from the conversations with them.”
Career Development
Throughout the summer, students had access to career services and resources provided by the NYU Shanghai Career Development Center (CDC). To prepare for the upcoming fall recruitment season, students took advantage of individual advising appointments with the career coaches to improve their resumes, develop career action plans, and identify job search strategies. Through the Distinguished Industry Speaker Series and the Recruitment Preparation Series, students gained insights into different industries and interacted with professionals working at companies like Danone, Coca Cola, Boston Consulting Group, Cedarlake Capital, Google and more. Zhuoming Cai, MSQF Class of 2023, appreciated the resources CDC has provided for the students, sharing: “They have posted a lot of internships and work opportunities on the website. The resume templates they shared also served as a guide for me to organize my thoughts, which saved me a lot of editing time.”
Social Events
Outside of academic and professional commitments, students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of social events in New York designed to help them get to know the city and local culture. On June 26, they headed to the legendary Yankee Stadium to watch the NY Yankees play the Houston Astros in a baseball game. Students also went on a guided Circle Line Sightseeing Boat Cruise tour on July 18, which took them down the Hudson River and up the East River to enjoy an iconic view of the NYC skyline and to learn historic information about the famous landmarks along the route from an award-winning guide. For those who couldn’t come to New York this summer due to travel restrictions, staff at NYU Shanghai organized an online mixer in July so remote students could get to know each other through icebreaker activities, and an ice cream social event in August on campus at NYU Shanghai so local students could meet in person.

Cohort Events
Student-elected cohort leaders also organized in-person and virtual events to enhance student engagement and build the cohort camaraderie. Students were able to connect with each other through karaoke, board games, escape room adventures, gift exchanges, and more. For Angela Guo, MSOMS Class of 2023, these events were the most memorable moments: “My peers really made my summer experience special. We went to lunch together after class and watched fireworks on July 4th. We supported each other like we were a family.”

Looking ahead to Fall 2022
Students in New York marked the end of the summer semester with a celebration on August 12 at a rooftop hotel restaurant. Students celebrated their achievements along with the academic directors of the joint Master’s programs and some of our Stern faculty members and NYC based alumni.
